Prenatal  Care

We strive to build a strong and trusting relationship throughout your pregnancy. Prenatal visits last up to a full hour, allowing for ample time to assess the well-being of mom and baby and to discuss questions and concerns. Partners are welcome and encouraged to join appointments! Other aspects of home birth midwifery care include:

  • Routine lab tests & blood work

  • Informed choice discussions & handouts about standard screening & testing options during pregnancy, including Gestational Diabetes and Group Beta Strep

  • Referrals for ultrasound and genetic screening

  • Exercise, nutrition, and herbal medicine counseling

  • Medical consultation if issues arise that are out outside of the midwifery scope of practice

  • On-call availability between appointments

Prenatal visits in midwifery care follow the standard OB schedule, taking place every 4 weeks until the 28th week of pregnancy, every 2 weeks until the 36th week, and weekly until labor begins.

Labor and Birth

We do everything we can to maintain a calm and unobtrusive presence while assessing the health and well being of mom and baby. Throughout labor, birth, and the few hours after birth we offer:

  • Individualized and continuous care and support. For some moms this means constant contact with verbal affirmations and massage. For
others, continuous care means the midwives will slip into the room to monitor mom's and baby's vitals, then slip right back out.

  • Regular monitoring of mom & baby’s vitals and well being throughout labor to ensure low-risk status, health, and safety

  • Inclusion and reassurance to the support people present

  • Compassionate guidance through the birth process and intervention, with informed choice, when issues arise outside of what is considered normal

  • Birth tub set-up & take-down for hydrotherapy in labor and/or water birth

  • Midwife support in the case of transfer to the hospital, whether prenatally, in labor, or postpartum

  • Head to toe newborn exam, as well as routine newborn procedures if family chooses (Vitamin K and Erythromycin)

  • Thorough perineal exam and suturing if needed

  • Well-baby care, including jaundice screening, care of the umbilical cord, vitals, metabolic screening

  • Breastfeeding support, latch and tongue tie assessments

  • Birth certificate, social security card paperwork, and commemorative footprints

  • Nutritional support and movement and exercises recommendations

  • Family planning and contraception counseling

  • Well woman exam & pap smear (offered at final visit)

  • On-call availability between appointments
